UNICEF today presented over one million US dollars’ worth of non-food emergency items to the Department of Education for school children in 9 provinces.
The “pre-positioned’’ emergency supplies are part of the Education Department’s ‘Education in Emergencies’ (EiE) program that UNICEF supports.
UNICEF Country Representative Baba Danbappa said that the supplies will be given to schools that may be affected during emergencies.
“The objective of prepositioning these supplies is to ensure that a child’s learning is not disrupted during an emergency,” said Danbappa.
He said the supplies contained: School in a box (SiB) – teaching and learning materials, School in a tent (SiT), Early childhood development (ECD) kits – items include play materials, building blocks and educational tools, Emergency family kits (EFK) –items include fleece blankets, pots, soap, plates, and spoons.
On hand to receive the supplies was the Education Secretary Dr Michael Tapo who thanked UNICEF for their assistance in delivering basic education to all parts of the country.
He said 13 provinces had already benefitted from this support from UNIICEF in 2013 and he looked forward to their continued support into the future.
The 9 provinces that will receive the supplies are: Milne Bay, Central, NCD, Enga, Jiwaka, Hela, Southern Highlands, Gulf and Western provinces. The supplies are expected to be delivered by Post PNG next year to each province.
